Pro tip: stop buttering the back of the brick, wasted 3 years doing that
Was laying a garden wall out in Fresno last month and the old guy I sub for watched me for about 10 minutes then asked why I was smearing mortar on the back of every brick. Told him thats how I was taught and he just shook his head and said the back butter only matters on block, brick grabs fine off the bed joint. Tried it his way on the next course and the bond was just as solid and I cut maybe 40 minutes off the day. Anybody else get taught something at the start that you later found out was just a habit?
