My mortar mixing went from guessing to actually measuring after a job in July

I used to just eyeball the water and sand ratio for every batch, but after a wall failed a rain test in 2022 I started weighing everything. Now I hit 28-day compression every time. Anyone else switch to a strict mix ratio after a fail?

Man that 2022 job must have stung. I started measuring everything after a retaining wall I built crumbled during a freeze-thaw cycle back in 2019.

Freeze-thaw is brutal man. After my second failed attempt at a paver patio I started triple checking everything too. What finally worked for me was going way overboard on the base material. Like I added an extra 4 inches of crushed gravel and compacted it in layers. Also made sure to slope everything away from the house at least a quarter inch per foot. Haven't had any heaving since then. Its a pain to do right but beats having to tear it all out again later.
