My level popped a bubble mid-wall on a patio job in Tucson

I was setting a long run of brick last Tuesday and my old 48 inch level started throwing a false read, so I had to tear down 3 courses and start over. Turns out the vial had shifted after I dropped it off a ladder the week before, and I did not catch it until the wall looked crooked from the street. Any tips on checking a level's accuracy on site without a known flat surface?
