Mason's line vs nylon string. I made the switch.

Used mason's line for probably 15 years. Always frayed. Always snapped. Especially on hot days when the line gets tight. Finally tried that 1.5mm nylon braided string from the fishing supply shop. No joke. Lasted 3 full weeks on one job. Didn't even lose tension. The mason's line would be dust by day 3. Cost me 8 bucks for a spool. Only catch is the knot slips easier if you don't do a double wrap. Has anyone else tried switching to something non-standard for their layout lines?

Nah, mason line holds fine for me if you keep it shaded on hot days.

Absolutely agree. I've been using the same mason line on my driveway for two years now and it barely faded. The key is definitely keeping it out of direct sun during the hottest part of the day. I just throw a tarp over it when I'm done working and it stays looking fresh forever. Some people complain about masonry string snapping but I think they're buying the cheap stuff from the hardware store. The thicker contractor grade stuff holds up way better and costs like two bucks more. Totally worth it for how long it lasts.
