Just realized my old boss in Cleveland was right about mixing mortar in winter

He always said to add a cup of hot water per bag when the temp drops below 40. I thought it was just an old habit. Last winter I skipped it on a small porch job. The mortar set way too slow, almost ruined the whole thing. Had to tent it and use a heater for two days to save it. Anyone else have a cold weather trick that seemed silly but actually works?

You had to tent and heat a porch for two days? That sounds like a nightmare. I would have lost my mind trying to fix that. It's wild how one little step can mess up a whole job. Makes you wonder what other old school tips are actually solid advice.

Totally thought my grandpa was just set in his ways. He swore by putting a pinch of sugar in plaster to slow it down on hot days. Laughed it off until a summer patio repair turned into a rushed, sweaty mess. Tried his trick on the next one and it was way more manageable.
