Found out mortar has a shelf life the hard way

I was cleaning out my shed last week and found a half-used bag of mortar mix from like 2 years ago. Turns out old mortar can lose its strength and cause bonding issues. Has anyone else accidentally used expired mix and regretted it?

My uncle had a brick wall start crumbling after using mortar that was maybe 3 years old. He said the bag felt kind of hard and lumpy when he opened it but figured it was fine.

Kinda reminds me of when my buddy tried to patch a planter with some old concrete mix he'd had sitting in his garage for ages. It just crumbled apart like a week later when he moved the thing. Said the bag had gotten damp and there were hard chunks in it that wouldn't break up. He ended up having to chip it all out and start fresh.
