Chatting with a retired mason made me question my speed game

Was talking to this old timer, Frank, up in Scranton last Friday while we waited for mortar to set. He watched me lay maybe 80 blocks in a morning and just shook his head, said 'you're fast but you're not good yet, son.' That stung because I've been at this for 7 years and thought I had it figured out. He showed me how he checks every joint with his thumb before it sets, takes an extra 10 seconds per block, and his walls come out dead straight with zero touch-up. Made me wonder if I've been building my rep on speed instead of craft, and now I'm second-guessing every job I've done this month. Anyone else ever had a veteran make you feel like a rookie all over again?
