I still think about that old timer at the county fair who showed me his starter jar
He must have been 80, and he told me he’d been feeding that same batch of sourdough starter since the 1950s, said it survived three moves and a flood. It made me wonder how many of us are still sticking with one method long enough to really get good at it, or if we all just jump around too much.

Huh, never thought about it that way.
That starter probably outlasted a couple marriages and most of his friends.
Makes you wonder what we're really throwing away when we ditch a method for something shinier.

Hold on to that memory, man. That old timer's starter is proof that sticking with something through the boring parts is where the real flavor comes from. We're all so quick to chase the next new thing, but consistency is the secret ingredient, not the fancy tools. It makes me think my dried-out herbs and half-used spice jars are a joke compared to his decades of care. Maybe I need to pick one craft and just let it get ugly and old, you know? What's the one thing you've actually stuck with for more than five years?
