Warning: My cactus collection got scale mites from a nursery plant I didn't quarantine
I brought home a new succulent from a greenhouse in Austin about 3 weeks ago and just tossed it on the shelf with my others. Didn't think much of it until I noticed tiny brown bumps on my prize San Pedro. I lost 4 plants before I figured out what was happening. I had to isolate everything and spray them down with isopropyl alcohol every 3 days for 2 weeks. Has anyone else dealt with scale mites spreading through a whole shelf like that?
Stopped using peat-based mixes in my pots after a fungus gnat outbreak turned my Lithops into a mushy science experiment. Ended up switching to a 50/50 pumice and decomposed granite blend for most of my succulents. Soil choice matters way more than people realize when it comes to rot issues. Charlie, you ever try bottom watering with a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution? Killed off the larvae in my pots without damaging the roots.
