Unpopular opinion: I used to hate ferns but a talk with a park ranger flipped me

I always thought ferns were boring filler plants until I hiked in Muir Woods last month and a ranger explained how some ferns have been around since the dinosaurs. Now I have three different varieties in my shady backyard and they add way more texture than I expected. Any fern fans here with suggestions for a hardy species that can survive a Minnesota winter?

Isn't it funny how one conversation can totally flip your view on something that seemed so ordinary? I've noticed that with so many things, like how I used to think moss was just a nuisance until someone pointed out how it's basically a tiny little forest floor ecosystem. That one detail made me start paying attention, and now I can't walk through a damp patch without stopping to check if there's a mini fern or some clover hiding in it. It's like once you see the history or the hidden life in something, you can't unsee it, you know?

That's exactly how it went for me but with concrete - someone told me it's basically living rock that breathes moisture and now I find myself apologizing to old sidewalks. Funny how the things we overlook end up having the most personality once you actually look at them.
