The way people prune lavender into old wood is painful to watch

I saw a neighbor butcher a 6 year old lavender bush last weekend cutting it back to the woody stems, and now it will probably never regrow, has anyone else had to stop themselves from grabbing the pruners out of someone's hands?

I did that to my own lavender once, never made that mistake again.

A friend of mine at the local garden club swears by it. She chops her lavender back to the woody base every spring and hers come back stronger than ever the next year. If the plant is healthy and you cut above some green growth it can bounce back fine. Sometimes that hard prune is the only way to stop them from getting leggy and falling apart after a few years.
