Spent $40 on a moisture meter and it showed me I was drowning my peace lily

I kept seeing yellow leaves on my favorite plant and thought it needed more water, so I watered it even more. The meter read 'wet' for over a week straight after I stuck it in the soil. I stopped watering completely for two weeks until it read 'dry', and now new green leaves are finally coming in. Has anyone else had a plant that looked thirsty but was actually the opposite?

Classic case of loving something to death. My succulents probably think I'm trying to waterboard them half the time.

My aloe vera plant died last year from root rot because I watered it every week like my other plants. It's so easy to forget they come from dry places and store water in their leaves. I read that most indoor succulents only need a drink every two or three weeks, depending on the light. Now I wait until the soil is completely dry and the leaves get a little soft. It feels wrong to ignore them, but that's what keeps them alive.
