PSA: I planted mint in the ground 3 years ago and now my whole side yard in Boise is a mint farm
I put one little peppermint start in the dirt next to my fence back in spring 2023, thinking it would be a nice low hassle herb patch. By fall 2024 it had crept about 6 feet along the fence line, and this spring I pulled up runners running under the grass all the way to my neighbor's driveway. I spent two full Saturdays in April digging out roots by hand, and I filled nine 5 gallon buckets with nothing but mint rhizomes. The stuff is a runner, not a clumper, so every tiny root piece left behind just makes a new plant. If you want mint, keep it in a pot or sink a bottomless bucket at least 10 inches deep into the soil first. Has anyone here actually beaten mint back after it got loose in a garden bed, and if so, what finally worked?
