Hot take: a fern frond at the Atlanta botanical garden made me stop buying fancy potting mix
I was walking the fern house at the Atlanta Botanical Garden back in April and a volunteer was repotting a staghorn right there in front of everyone. She scooped up a handful of her mix and squeezed it, and it held together for a second then broke apart easy. She said if it drips or stays in a muddy ball, your roots are drowning. I went home and tested all 6 of my pots with that squeeze trick and 4 of them were way too wet. Now I mix my own with bark and perlite and everything looks better, but I still wonder if I'm getting the ratio right. What do you all use for ferns in regular house humidity?
