Got a Venus flytrap after years of thinking they were a gimmick

I always figured carnivorous plants were just a novelty that would die in a week. Then my neighbor showed me her 3-year-old flytrap that had caught over 20 flies last summer just sitting on her porch in Portland. Has anyone else had a plant they wrote off but turned out to be surprisingly tough?

Is it weird that I was totally that person too? I used to think they were just a gimmick, something you buy at the grocery store and it dies in like a week. Then my sister got one for her apartment in Chicago, no fancy setup or anything, and the thing actually caught a bunch of gnats. I ended up buying one last spring and it's still kicking on my kitchen windowsill, even survived me forgetting to water it a few times.
