Found out moss can hold 20 times its weight in water. Mind blown.

I was reading this old gardening blog from a guy in Oregon last night. He was talking about how moss is basically nature's sponge. I knew it held water but 20 times its dry weight? That's crazy. I went out and checked the patch under my maple tree. It was like a wet towel. Made me rethink why I keep pulling it out of my yard. Maybe I should be letting it soak up runoff instead of fighting it. Has anyone else tried using moss as ground cover for wet spots?

Man, I had the same reaction when I first read about that. But here's what I'm wondering - does the type of moss matter for how much it holds? I've got some clumpy stuff that dries out fast, and then this flat carpet kind that stays wet for days. The Oregon blog guy probably had a specific species in mind. Also, have you noticed if it kills the grass underneath when you let it take over? Mine turned the lawn into a slime pit after a rainy week.
