Can we talk about hitting 200 species on my life list and feeling nothing?
I finally logged my 200th plant species in my county last month, a tiny white trillium hiding under a fallen oak in a park near Rochester. I expected some big rush of pride, but I mostly felt tired and wondered if chasing a number made me miss the actual plants. On one hand, the list pushed me to visit 34 new spots this spring and learn my sedges way better than before. On the other hand, I caught myself glancing at my phone to log stuff instead of just sitting with a patch of bloodroot for a while. So which is it, does counting help you learn or does it turn a walk into a chore?
