Bought a carnivorous plant, it ate more than gnats last Tuesday
I got a Venus flytrap from a nursery in Portland last spring and kept it on my kitchen windowsill like the tag said. I was careful with distilled water and left it alone during winter dormancy, but I didn't know they go nuts when they wake up. Last Tuesday I came home and it had closed on a piece of my dog's kibble that somehow flew off his bowl. The trap was struggling to digest it and started turning black within three days. I read that feeding them anything with too much protein or fat can basically burn the trap out. So now I'm paranoid about every crumb near the plant and I've moved it to a screened porch where nothing drops in. Has anyone else had a pitcher plant or sundew grab something weird off the floor or a counter? What do you do to keep random debris away from the traps?
