Spent $400 on a used board shear back in 2010 and it's still my best buy.
I was cutting everything by hand with a knife and straightedge before that, and it was slow and never quite perfect. The shear made trimming text blocks and boards so much faster and cleaner from day one. Anyone still using a knife, or did you all switch to a shear or cutter too?

That board shear money could have bought a lot of really good blades and a solid straightedge. A sharp knife gives you way more control for tricky cuts and odd angles, something a big shear just can't do. It forces you to learn proper technique, which matters more than speed for a lot of projects. The shear is just a single-purpose tool taking up space.
