Spent 3 hours fixing a headband that took 10 minutes to sew

I was finishing up a leather journal last week and the headband on the spine kept pulling loose. Thought it was a tension issue so I kept adjusting my sewing frame. Redid it twice before I realized the thread I grabbed was too thick for the linen cord I was using. The whole thing unraveled every time I pulled it tight. Switched to a thinner waxed thread and it sat perfect on the first try. Three hours wasted because I didn't check my materials first. Has anyone else had a simple fix turn into a whole day project?

Did your friend try blaming the cat for knocking over their thread spool like mine did?

Don't you think sometimes the extra time is worth it just to figure out what actually went wrong though? I mean... I've been there with the wrong thread size thing way too many times. @angela_kelly's comment about the cat reminded me of my own setup - I keep a little box of scraps by my sewing spot and my dog keeps trying to steal the felt pieces. But that thread mismatch is a real killer. I spent a whole Saturday once trying to sew a linen cover with polyester thread and it kept snapping until I realized the core was too weak. Sometimes you gotta sit in the mess to learn the right way.
