Realized I was cutting my signatures the wrong direction after 8 months, and a lady at the Dayton bindery caught it
I bind journals on the side and I always cut my paper with the grain running vertical because that's how the big sheets come out of the pack. Last Tuesday I was at a small bindery meetup in Dayton and a woman named Ruth watched me fold one signature and just said 'your spine is fighting you.' Sure enough, folding against the grain was why my sections never sat flat and my sewing holes kept ripping. Now I cut everything with the grain along the spine and the difference in how the book opens is night and day. Has anyone else had a long stretch like that where the fix was one small habit you couldn't see on your own?
