PSA: tried PVA glue vs wheat paste on my first reback and the difference hit me in 20 mins
I was rebacking a beat up 1890s novel I got at a library sale in Akron for 2 bucks. Could not decide between my usual PVA or mixing up wheat paste, so I did one spine half with each. Wheat paste gave me around 20 minutes of working time vs maybe 4 with the PVA, which meant I could actually line up the cloth without panicking. PVA grabbed faster but went on way thicker and dried stiff, while the paste stayed flexible and cleaned up with just a damp sponge. I ended up going paste for the whole hinge repair and the book opens flat now. Any of you mix the two for a slower grab, or do you just pick one and deal with the clock?
