My pressed signatures on a 300 page novel went from ragged to clean in 2 months, glue or technique?
Two months back I sent a 300 page rebind of a library sale copy to a binder in Portland and the spine edge looked chewed, so I started pressing my own signatures with a $30 cast iron weight instead of my hands and the folds cleaned up in about 6 weeks. Now half my local group says the fix was the weight, the other half swears it was just me slowing down and scoring each fold twice. Which one do you think actually did the work, the press or the habit?
Slowing down probably got you most of the way there, since scoring twice means you're actually creasing the paper instead of just bending it once and hoping. The weight just holds that crease flat while it sets, which is why the two together beat either one alone.
