Almost ruined a whole batch of leather with cheap PVA glue last week

I was rebinding a 1908 encyclopedia set in my workshop in Austin and used generic white glue on the spines instead of proper bookbinder's PVA. Within 3 hours the leather started peeling off in sheets like dead skin. Has anyone else had a project totally wrecked by using the wrong adhesive?

That cheap stuff turns to rubber too, cracks everything up later.

Heard a guy at the shop say the same thing about that brand.
