A chat with my kid's teacher changed how I pick book cloth
I was helping my son's third grade class make simple notebooks, and his teacher said something that stuck with me. She pointed out how the kids always went for the brightest, shiniest cloth first, even if it felt cheap. She said, 'They pick with their eyes, but they remember with their hands.' That hit different because I've been guilty of choosing fancy-looking cloth for my own projects, only to have it wear poorly. Now I let my hands test the drape and strength for at least a minute before I even look at the color. What's your go-to test for a new roll of book cloth before you commit to a project?

Totally get that. I've been burned by that exact thing, buying a roll of this gorgeous metallic blue cloth that looked amazing online. Felt like stiff paper the second I touched it and cracked along the spine after like two opens. Now I do the crinkle test, I guess? I'll take a corner of the sample and just scrunch it in my fist for a bit to see if it bounces back or stays all creased. That teacher is so right, the hand memory is real.
