Tried the 50 page rule on our pick last month, and only 2 people finished the book
Our club in Austin has 9 people and we always fight about length, so I pitched a rule where if nobody is hooked by page 50 you can quit with no guilt. I thought this would help people actually show up and talk, but at the meetup only 2 of us had finished and the talk died in like 10 minutes. Turns out the rule just gave everyone a free pass to bail early instead of pushing through the slow part. We are picking a 600 page book for next month, so has anyone found a rule that keeps people reading without turning it into homework?

Waited, so you're telling me 7 grown adults couldn't make it past 50 pages and then just sat there with nothing to say? That's brutal, a reading rule only works if people actually want to read the book in the first place. Maybe let whoever picks the book pitch it hard for 5 minutes at the last meeting so folks get hooked before they even start.
