The week my book club fell apart over a dictionary definition
Last Tuesday we were debating whether The Borrowers counts as fantasy or just fiction with tiny people. I brought up the Oxford definition of fantasy, which turned into a 20 minute argument about what words even mean. Two members said I ruined the whole vibe and one guy literally pulled out his phone to fact check me. We still haven't finished the discussion and the next meeting is Friday. Has anyone else had a book club derail over something this stupid?

lmao fact checking mid-argument is definitely a power move though.

Oh man that's hilarious lol. I actually saw a thing the other day where someone argued that Harry Potter is more fantasy than Lord of the Rings because of the magical system, but then someone else said no that's not how genres work. Book clubs get weirdly intense about definitions. Honestly I think pulling out your phone to fact check you during a book club is a total power move and I kind of respect it even though it's super obnoxious. Hope you guys can get back to actually talking about the book on Friday though.
