The group read one chapter aloud and the whole meeting derailed

At our last meetup, someone suggested we do a dramatic reading of just one chapter, mostly as a goof. We spent 45 minutes arguing about a single character's motivation because hearing it out loud made everyone hear something different. I thought reading aloud would make things clearer, but it actually split the room in half. Has anyone else tried this and had the opposite of what you expected happen?

oh man this happened to us with a book club last year and it was a TOTAL mess. we did one scene from a mystery novel and half the group was convinced the detective was lying the whole time, the other half thought he was just dumb. like 40 minutes of people quoting the same three sentences back at each other with totally different tones. its wild how much your own voice puts a spin on things you thought you understood on the page. we actually had to vote on it just to move on and someone still brought it up the next meeting.
