That time I rolled my eyes at a friend's recommendation for historical fiction

She swore by 'Wolf Hall' after I said I hated slow period pieces, but 50 pages in I was hooked on the political drama. Has anyone else been surprised by a genre they thought they'd hate?

Right? The way Cromwell just quietly dismantles everyone is pure chess match energy, you can't look away. That whole trilogy is a masterclass in making political maneuvering feel like a thriller, not a history lesson. Mantel really cracked the code on making the 1500s feel alive and urgent.

72 pages in I was still skeptical but then Cromwell started outmaneuvering everyone at court and I couldn't put it down. That book totally flipped my view on historical fiction being boring or slow. Now I'm three books deep into the series and recommending it to everyone who will listen.
