That $30 book club pick nobody read wrecked our whole discussion

I put down $30 for a copy of The Peripheral by William Gibson thinking it would spark a great debate. Turns out I was the only one who finished it and the rest of the group just skimmed Wikipedia summaries. How do you get people to actually read the book when a 480 page novel feels like homework?

Oh man, that is so frustrating! I actually just read something about group reading habits and how people get overwhelmed by page counts. It said breaking a book into smaller weekly chunks helps a lot, like assigning specific chapters so nobody feels the pressure of finishing the whole thing at once. Maybe your group could try that next time, or pick a shorter book to start with. I get that long novels feel like a chore when life is busy, but it stinks to be the only one who actually did the reading.

Assigning specific chapters" sounds like homework I'd rather patch a roof in July.
