Serious question, has anyone else's club forced a 'classic' they just couldn't get through?

My club in Tacoma picked 'Moby Dick' last month, and after 100 pages of whaling details, I skipped to the last chapter and read a summary online. I actually contributed more to the debate about Ahab's obsession than the people who slogged through the whole thing. Is this a valid way to engage with a book you find unreadable, or is it just cheating?

Our Seattle group tried 'Ulysses' last year and it broke us. Your method sounds perfectly valid to me.

Wait, you guys tried to read Ulysses as a group? That sounds like a special kind of torture. I can't imagine trying to keep everyone on the same page with that book. No wonder it broke you.
