Rant: our club picked a 600 page book and the room almost split in half
We met at the library on Tuesday with 14 people and 5 of them never got past page 100. One guy said he quit at page 60 and felt like the group set him up to fail. I was the one who put the book on the list, so I sat there and took it while people argued about whether long books are fair. What I did was split the next meeting into two rooms, one for the first half and one for the back half, then we all come back together at the end. It worked okay but two people said they felt like they got put in the slow class, which was not my plan at all. How do you all handle it when a book is just too long for some folks but others love it? Do you cap page count or just let it ride?
Felt like the group set him up to fail" is such a real feeling and it pops up everywhere, not just book clubs. It's the same thing as a hiking group that says "all levels welcome" and then picks a 12 mile trail, or a recipe swap where half the dishes need a stand mixer and a free Saturday. People say "no pressure" but the plan itself is the pressure. Your two room idea wasn't bad, it just had bad branding, and the fix might be as simple as calling them "front half" and "back half" instead of anything that sounds like a tier.
