Our book club's resident contrarian was right about pacing, and it stings

At our March meeting for a 600 page thriller, Dana insisted we split it into two sessions because the middle drags hard. I argued we could handle it, since we'd done similar length before. Well, by page 320, half the group admitted they skimmed chapters 15 through 22 just to get to the reveal. The discussion turned into a mess of people mixing up plot points, and we spent 40 minutes untangling who actually poisoned the vicar. Next month we're doing a 450 page sci-fi, and Dana wants us to read it in three chunks. Has anyone else had a member whose scheduling advice you ignored, then wished you'd listened when the meeting flopped?
