Our book club argued for an hour about Jane Eyre until my neighbor said one thing that flipped my whole view
She just calmly pointed out that Rochester was basically holding her prisoner and I suddenly stopped romanticizing the whole relationship.

Wait, she pointed out he was holding her prisoner? Like locking her in the attic prisoner, or just being controlling in general?
That's wild because I always read it as this big romantic drama but now that you mention it, the guy literally hid his mentally ill wife in the attic and lied about it. That's not love, that's a whole lot of red flags.
I guess I just accepted it as part of the gothic setting back when I read it. Never really stopped to think how messed up that would be in real life.
Makes you wonder how many other classic romances are actually pretty toxic if you look at them straight.
