My friend told me to skip the first chapter of our last book club pick

We were reading 'The Overstory' for our group in Charlotte. My friend Lisa, who had already read it, said the opening chapter was slow and confusing, and I should start with chapter two. I took her advice and jumped right in. It worked at first, but when we met to talk about it, I was totally lost on the big themes everyone else was discussing. They all said the first chapter set up everything that came later. I had to go back and read it anyway. Has anyone else gotten book skipping advice that backfired?

Wait, isn't the first chapter usually there for a reason? Sounds like skipping it just made more work for you lol.

I mean, sometimes the first chapter is just boring setup though. Like in some games, the tutorial drags on forever and you just want to get to the good part. Skipping ahead can actually save time if you already know the basics. It's not always more work, you can figure stuff out as you go.
