My book club used to tear through fiction in 2 weeks flat.

I pushed for nonfiction history titles for the last 6 months and half the group quit. We lost 4 members after reading that book on the Ottoman Empire. Has anyone else had their club fall apart over genre choices?

Man, "I can't imagine dropping out over that" - I bet those 4 members had been on the fence for a while and the history books just pushed them over. I've seen this play out before where people quietly resent the switch but won't say anything until they hit a breaking point. You might want to offer a hybrid approach where you do one history book every few months and rotate back to fiction in between. That way you keep the people who love the deep dives without losing the ones who just want a lighter read.

4 members quit over a book about the Ottoman Empire? That's wild, I can't imagine dropping out of a club over that.
