My book club split in half over 'The Midnight Library'

Last Tuesday at our meetup in Portland, someone said the book was 'too predictable and cheesy' and another person called it 'life-changing.' We ended up arguing for 45 minutes about whether a feel-good ending ruins a serious story. Has your group ever had a debate so heated it changed how you pick books?

We switched to a secret ballot vote system and it saved our group from falling apart.

You know, it's funny you mention secret ballots @skylerw87, because my group had a similar blowup over "Where the Crawdads Sing" and we ended up doing this weird thing where we each texted our take on the book before the meeting. The moderator would just read them out loud without names attached. It actually killed the shouting matches but then people started guessing who said what and we were back to square one. At this point, we just pick books by random number generator and nobody gets to argue about the process anymore.
