Just realized our book club has been reading the same type of book for 2 years
After our last meeting, someone pointed out that 8 of our last 10 picks were all thrillers or mysteries, and I hadn't even noticed. We thought we were mixing it up but we were stuck in a rut the whole time. Has anyone else's book club fallen into a genre loop without realizing, and how did you break out of it?

OH MAN it is SO easy to fall into a genre loop like that! My old book club did the same thing with historical fiction for like a year and a half, we just kept picking "safe" WW2 novels because nobody wanted to argue about what to read. What finally broke us out was when someone put a YOUNG ADULT fantasy book on the poll as a joke and it actually won because we were all so sick of the same old thing. We actually had our best discussion ever that month. Sometimes you just gotta let the weirdest option win and see what happens, you know?

Yeah, I was one of those people who thought sticking to what you know was the smart move. But nancy929's story actually made me reconsider, especially the part about the joke pick becoming the best meeting. Maybe I've been holding my group back by only suggesting things I'm already sure everyone will like.
