Hot take: My book club missed the point on the mom in Pride and Prejudice
Our group talked about family roles in Pride and Prejudice last month. Most people called Mrs. Bennet a bad parent for pushing her girls to marry. I see her as a mother doing her best in a tough situation. She knew her daughters could end up poor without husbands. That fear drove her actions, even if they seemed over the top.

Wait, no way. Mrs. Bennet was totally out of line. She scared her daughters with all that marriage talk and made them look desperate. That just pushed good guys away. If she chilled out, maybe Jane and Lizzy would have found matches easier. Her panic messed everything up for them.

Mrs. Bennet's fear was real, but she went about it all wrong. Her constant scheming just stressed out her girls instead of helping them find good matches. Being less obvious could have avoided so much trouble.
