Heard a lady in my book club say older books are too slow and it got me thinking
We were debating our next pick and she just scoffed at anything written before 2000. Said she doesn't have the patience for long descriptions or slow burns anymore. Made me think about how much our reading habits have shifted with phones and endless scrolling. She's not wrong, but I wonder if we're missing out on the depth that comes from letting a story breathe. Has anyone else noticed your club leaning harder toward fast-paced modern stuff over the classics?

Read an article the other day that said our brains actually rewire with constant phone use making it harder to focus on long passages. The writer said it's like a muscle that atrophies if you don't use it. Makes me wonder if we're trading patience for speed without even realizing it.

That research by Nicholas Carr who wrote The Shallows makes a solid case about this. Honestly @logan263 the whole muscle analogy is pretty spot on from what I've noticed with my own reading habits. Tbh I've been trying to read actual books before bed instead of scrolling and it feels like I'm slowly getting my attention span back.
