Appreciation post: that one guy at the library who told me to ditch the group read

My book club spent three months arguing over a 500-page literary novel nobody finished. Then a librarian named Dave said pick something under 250 pages for the next one. We read a quick mystery in two weeks and had our best debate yet. Turns out the biggest obstacle was just the book size itself. Has anyone else found that cutting page count helped your group actually talk about the book?

That librarian Dave nailed it, my group spent forever on huge books until we tried a short one and actually finished it for once.

Short books have their place, but my group actually loves the big ones. Tackling a long novel together gives us way more time to really dig into the characters and plot. Finishing something shorter just feels a little unsatisfying compared to that big shared journey.
