Vent: Picked a flux core welder over a TIG setup for my home rig
Had about $900 saved up for a new welder last fall. I was stuck between a cheap TIG setup and a decent flux core machine. Everyone online said TIG is the way to go for clean work. But I do a lot of outdoor repair jobs on trailers and heavy equipment in the yard. The flux core handles wind and rusty metal way better for me. Six months in and I've burned through 3 spools of wire on farm gates alone. Has anyone else skipped the fancy stuff and just stuck with a simple wire feeder for dirty jobs?

Did you read that thread on WeldingWeb where the guy said flux core saves you from buying a gas bottle and having it blow over in the wind? That's what sold me on keeping my little wire feeder for the messy stuff.

Gas bills add up but nothing beats clean welds and no spatter cleanup headache.
