Update: 6 inch crack in the mud drum weld turned out to be my own gauge, not the boiler
Last Tuesday at the plant in Gary I got called over a crack reading on a mud drum weld that had me and two other hands chasing it for a full shift, and it turned out my ultrasonic gauge was reading off because I had not zeroed it against the test block since the job started. I know the old saying that the gauge is always right, but I am starting to think we lean on that so hard we skip the 30 second check, and that is exactly how a guy ends up grinding good weld for nothing. What is your rule for when to trust the reading and when to go grab a second set of eyes?
