Unpopular opinion: a torch tip cleaner beats a wire brush for cleaning out slag every time
Used to hit the inside of my tube ends with a wire brush on a drill and call it good. Took forever and never got the tight spots. A guy on my crew handed me a $9 torch tip cleaner about 4 months ago and I have not touched the brush since. The little files get into the groove where the slag hides. Anyone got a better tool for the small stuff or is this as good as it gets?
Man, I gotta disagree on this one. Those tip cleaner files are thin and brittle, and I've snapped more than one trying to hog out real slag from a tube end. A wire brush on a die grinder is still the better call for volume, and for the tight stuff a small carbide burr in a rotary tool will chew through it way faster than a $9 file set. Tip cleaners are great for what they're made for, cleaning torch tips, but they're too flimsy for tube prep.
