That brittle fracture info from the Chattanooga seminar got me spooked
Went to a safety refresher in Chattanooga last week and the instructor dropped a stat about brittle fractures happening way below the rated temp if there's a scratch or nick in the steel. Apparently a hairline flaw from a weld spatter can turn a 40 foot beam into a cracked egg at 20 degrees, and I never even thought about checking for that before a cold weather lift. Has anyone else seen a failure traced back to a tiny surface defect, or is this just the guy trying to scare us into more inspections?
You ever seen a nick on a beam turn into a full crack after a cold night?
I've had inspectors flag stuff like that, and honestly one small pit turned into a real problem on a bridge job.
Guy might be pushing extra checks, but that stat checks out with what I've seen.
