Switched from soapstone to a carbide scribe for layout marks and never looked back

I used to always use soapstone for marking plate layouts. But on a job in Hammond last winter I was laying out a big header and the soapstone kept rubbing off when I leaned on it. A old timer handed me a carbide scribe and told me to try it. Now I can see my lines even after grinding nearby. But you gotta be careful not to scribe too deep or it can start a crack. Anybody else switch tools for marking and stick with it?

Yeah, just don't sneeze while you're scribing or you'll turn that header into a long crack.

What depth do you usually aim for with your carbide scribe (just scratching the surface or a bit more)? I've always worried about going too deep, especially on thinner material where it feels like the line itself becomes a stress riser. Have you ever had a line actually turn into a crack on you from scribing too hard?
