Swapped my hot work permit for a cold cut on a live line, here's what happened
Last month on a job in Gary, we had a 24 inch steam line that needed a section replaced. The plant manager wanted us to hot tap it to keep production running, but I pushed for a full shutdown and cold cut instead. It took 6 extra hours of downtime, but we avoided welding near a live line with 150 psi behind it. The crew grumbled until we found the line had more corrosion than the prints showed, then they got quiet quick. Anyone else ever have to argue with a client about cutting corners on live systems?

Used to think the hot tap guys were just being dramatic about the risk, but that corrosion story hits different. Now I check every inch of pipe before I even talk about welding near a live system. Good call on your part, that extra downtime probably saved someone a hospital trip.
