Put money into a decent welding hood and it paid off on one job

Actually you're mostly right but a good hood also saves your eyes from strain over a whole day, not just one job. That long term comfort is part of the payoff too.

Ellis.felix, I hear you on the eye strain thing, but I've had a mid-range hood for three years now and my eyes feel the same as they did with a cheap one. The real difference to me is just how long the damn thing lasts before the lights start flickering.
