Overheard a guy at the supply house talking about a boiler with a 'personality'

I was picking up some fittings at the supply house on Wednesday morning when I caught two old-timers chatting. One says to the other 'my boiler's got a personality, it only acts up when I'm alone.' At first I laughed, but then he went on about how it would hold pressure fine all day until he was the only guy on the night shift. Made me think about how many weird little quirks we just accept in old equipment instead of actually tracking down the root cause. Anyone else got a machine that seems to know when nobody's watching?

So you're telling me a boiler has a personality, like it's secretly plotting to make one guy's night shift harder? Hang on though, have you ever worked a night shift with a machine that's been run hard for decades? I swear those things do develop their own little quirks and grudges. It's not about romanticizing broken parts, it's about the fact that a boiler that's been patched a dozen times knows exactly which weld is going to fail at 3 AM just to mess with you. Sometimes the timing is too perfect to be just dumb luck.
