I used to just eyeball gaps on boiler tube spacers until a job in Gary showed me the truth

For years I'd set those tube gaps by feel and call it good, but after a tube failure last fall from a 1/8 inch misalignment I started using a feeler gauge every time. Has anyone else had a close call from skipping a measurement that seemed too small to matter?

Buddy of mine skipped the gap check, tube slipped, whole shift got sent home early.

Tube slipped" is a polite way to say "oops, there goes the afternoon." @eva_hayes I've made similar mistakes, just usually with my coffee mug instead of industrial equipment. At least your buddy made everyone's day shorter.
